"This is a tale that you humans have passed down through uncounted generations... It tells of a war of unmatched scale and ferocity, the likes of which would never be seen again."

In this installment of The Legend of Zelda series, Zelda was born and raised on the floating island of Skyloft, an outcropping of land cast skyward thousands of years ago after a great war. Zelda is the daughter of Headmaster Gaepora, and attends Skyloft Knight Academy with her childhood friend Link. As a resident of Skyloft, Zelda is but "one half of a pair", and shares a special connection with a giant bird called a Loftwing. These birds are used as transportation, and play an important role in the annual Wing Ceremony that takes place in Skyloft every year. This ceremony consists of a competition and a formal ceremony in which its participants reenact the roles of the Goddess Hylia and the Goddess' Chosen Hero. In Skyward Sword, Zelda is chosen to play the role of the Goddess, and is elated when Link wins the race and is able to reenact the ceremony with him.

After the ceremony, the two take to the clouds on their Loftwings and share a tender moment together-- a tender moment that is interrupted by a black tornado that knocks Zelda off of her bird, plummeting to the surface. We discover later that this tornado was caused by Demon Lord Ghirahim, who needs to use Zelda as a sacrifice to resurrect his master, a demonic entity known as Demise. Unfortunately, Impa-- the servant of the Goddess-- protects Zelda from Ghirahim while Link undergoes his trials on the surface. When Link finally catches up to Zelda, Zelda reveals that she is the mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia who sealed Demise away generations and generations ago, and that Link is the Goddess' Chosen Hero. Because the Ultimate Power (the Triforce) was designed so that its power could not be wielded by gods, Hylia chose to abandon her mortal body and be reborn as Zelda, and chose the mortal Link to be her Chosen Hero. She hoped one day these moral incarnations would use this power to destroy Demise and finally bring peace to the surface.

When we take a look at Zelda's personality in this particular installment, it's easy to see rather large differences between this Zelda and Zeldas of past (er, future?). Unlike her descendants, Zelda lived the life of a relatively normal girl on Skyloft. She knitted, she kept a diary, she had a schoolgirl crush on her childhood friend, and so on and so forth, not knowing her true identity until she traveled with Impa and regained Hylia's memories at the temples scattered throughout the land. She was never royalty, no matter how much her father treated her like a princess.

This dual identity poses something of a conundrum. On the one hand, Zelda enjoyed her life with Link in Skyloft and still considered herself "his Zelda", but on the other, she knew she had a responsibility as a Goddess to protect her land and her people. By sacrificing everything, Zelda proved she's a very compassionate and selfless individual. It takes a lot to give up a happy life with the people you love and seal yourself inside a crystal for thousands of years to save the world. It takes a lot, but Zelda does it, and she does it without considering her own wants and desires for even a second. She does it, and she does it without complaint.

That's not to say she doesn't have regrets. The Goddess Hylia knew Link would travel all four corners of the earth to save Zelda, which is why she chose him to be her Hero. Understanding it would take more than an unbreakable spirit to obtain the Triforce, Hylia took advantage of Link's feelings for Zelda, knowing that the boy would do whatever it took to save her. Whether Link forgives her or not, no matter how hard she may try to rationalize it (they were in the middle of a war), she'll regret her decision to get Link wrapped up in things-- now, and for many generations to come. Zelda does a lot of apologizing to Link in future generations. When things go wrong and shit hits the fan, taking responsibility-- and all the blame that comes with it-- is just what she does.

While she may not possess the same regal demeanor of her descendants, Zelda shares quite a few of their personality traits. She's kind, cheerful, energetic, and wise beyond her years (even moreso after she attains Hylia's memories). Though she may not be very good at defending herself, she won't hesitate to stick up for friends or family. This is best demonstrated when she gets into Groose's face for the implied umpteenth time, lecturing him for bullying Link "again". Despite the fact that Groose is three times her size, she just plain doesn't give a damn when someone she cares for is being threatened, and won't hesitate to put her foot down and make her demands very clear. This feistiness seems to come out a lot when Link is involved. As Headmaster Gaepora commented, it's like Zelda's a different person when she's worried about Link. She fusses over him, lectures him, and when they were children, she was even jealous of the strong bond he shared with his Loftwing! Zelda can't particularly help it, though-- not when she's in love with him. People often act this way towards the ones they love.

Overall, Zelda is a kind, cheerful, selfless person who would give the shirt off her back to whoever needed it, whenever they needed it. With her newly discovered memories as Her Grace Hylia came boundless wisdom, and the heavy burden of responsibility.

( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :
Strengths:
- as the reincarnation of the goddess, she can use magic!
- though kind, she has a backbone and can be firm if need be
- wisdom!

Weaknesses:
- not physically strong
- can be a little hotheaded, or barge into a dangerous situation without much forethought- though, she might not be much like this from the canon point I am taking her from, being as how you could probably attribute that to a naivete she seems to lack by the end of the game!
- has a tendency to get kidnapped by bad dudes?

( Other Important Facts ) :
She likes to knit? :|a
